Metric space

In mathematics, a metric space is a set where a notion of distance between elements of the set is defined. The metric space which most closely corresponds to our intuitive understanding of space is the 3-dimensional Euclidean space. The Euclidean metric of this space defines the distance between two points as the length of the straight line connecting them. The geometry of the space depends on the metric chosen, and by using a different metric we can construct interesting non-Euclidean geometries such as those used in the theory of general relativity. A metric space induces topological properties like open and closed sets which leads to the study of even more abstract topological spaces.

History

Maurice Fréchet introduced metric spaces in his work Sur quelques points du calcul fonctionnel, Rendic. Circ. Mat. Palermo 22(1906) 1-74.

Definition

A metric space is a 2-tuple (X,d) where X is a set and d is a metric on X, that is, a function :d : X × XR such that # d(x, y) ≥ 0     (non-negativity) # d(x, y) = 0   if and only if   x = y     (identity of indiscernibles) # d(x, y) = d(y, x)     (symmetry) # d(x, z) ≤ d(x, y) + d(y, z)     (triangle inequality). The function d is also called distance function or simply distance. We often omit d and just write X for a metric space if it is clear from the context what metric we are using.

Examples


- The real numbers with the distance function d(x, y) = |yx| given by the absolute value, and more generally Euclidean n-space with the Euclidean distance, are complete metric spaces.
- Hyperbolic plane.
- Any normed vector space is a metric space by defining d(x, y) = ||yx||, see also distances based on norms. (If such a space is complete, we call it a Banach space). Example:
  - the Manhattan norm gives rise to the Manhattan distance, where the distance between any two points, or vectors, is the sum of the distances between corresponding coordinates.
- The discrete metric, where d(x,y)=1 for all x not equal to y and d(x,y)=0 otherwise, is a simple but important example, and can be applied to all sets.
- The British Rail metric (also called the Post Office metric) on a normed vector space, given by d(x, y)=||x|| + ||y|| for distinct points x and y, and d(x, x) = 0. The name alludes to the tendency of railway journeys (or letters) to proceed via London, which is identified with the origin.
- The Chessboard distance, the number of moves a chess king would take to travel from x to y.
- If X is some set and M is a metric space, then the set of all bounded functions f : XM (i.e. those functions whose image is a bounded subset of M) can be turned into a metric space by defining d(f, g) = supx in X d(f(x), g(x)) for any bounded functions f and g. If M is complete, then this space is complete as well.
- The Levenshtein distance, also called character edit distance, is a measure of the similarity between two strings u and v. The distance is the minimal number of deletions, insertions, or substitutions required to transform u into v.
- If X is a topological (or metric) space and M is a metric space, then the set of all bounded continuous functions from X to M forms a metric space if we define the metric as above: d(f, g) = supx in X d(f(x), g(x)) for any bounded continuous functions f and g. If M is complete, then this space is complete as well.
- If M is a connected Riemannian manifold, then we can turn M into a metric space by defining the distance of two points as the infimum of the lengths of the paths (continuously differentiable curves) connecting them.
- If G is an undirected connected graph, then the set V of vertices of G can be turned into a metric space by defining d(x, y) to be the length of the shortest path connecting the vertices x and y.
- Similarly (apart from mathematical details):
  - For any system of roads and terrains the distance between two locations can be defined as the length of the shortest route. To be a metric there should not be one-way roads. Examples include some mentioned above: the Manhattan norm, the British Rail metric, and the Chessboard distance.
  - More generally, for any system of roads and terrains, with given maximum possible speed at any location, the "distance" between two locations can be defined as the time the fastest route takes. To be a metric there should not be one-way roads, and the maximum speed should not depend on direction.
- Similarly, in 3D, the metrics on the surface of a polyhedron include the ordinary metric, and the distance over the surface; a third metric on the edges of a polyhedron is one where the "paths" are the edges. For example, the distance between opposite vertices of a unit cube is √3, √5, and 3, respectively.
- If M is a metric space, we can turn the set K(M) of all compact subsets of M into a metric space by defining the Hausdorff distance d(X, Y) = inf. In this metric, two elements are close to each other if every element of one set is close to some element of the other set. One can show that K(M) is complete if M is complete.
- The set of all (isometry classes of) compact metric spaces form a metric space with respect to Gromov-Hausdorff distance.

Metric spaces as topological spaces

In any metric space M we can define the open balls as the sets of the form ::B(x; r) = , where x is in M and r is a positive real number, called the radius of the ball. A subset of M which is a union of (finitely or infinitely many) open balls is called an open set. The complement of an open set is called closed. Every metric space is automatically a topological space, the topology being the set of all open sets. A topological space which can arise in this way from a metric space is called a metrizable space; see the article on metrization theorems for further details. Since metric spaces are topological spaces, one has a notion of continuous function between metric spaces. Without referring to the topology, this notion can also be directly defined using limits of sequences; this is explained in the article on continuous functions.

Boundedness and compactness

A metric space M is called bounded if there exists some number r, such that d(x,y) ≤ r for all x and y in M. The smallest possible such r is called the diameter of M. The space M is called precompact or totally bounded if for every r > 0 there exist finitely many open balls of radius r whose union equals M. Since the set of the centres of these balls is finite, it has finite diameter, from which it follows (using the triangle inequality) that every totally bounded space is bounded. The converse does not hold, since any infinite set can be given the discrete metric (the first example above) under which it is bounded and yet not totally bounded. A useful characterisation of compactness for metric spaces is that a metric space is compact if and only if it is complete and totally bounded. Note that compactness depends only on the topology, while boundedness depends on the metric. Note that in the context of intervals in the space of real numbers and occasionally regions in a Euclidean space Rn a bounded set is referred to as "a finite interval" or "finite region". However boundedness should not in general be confused with "finite", which refers to the number of elements, not to how far the set extends; finiteness implies boundedness, but not conversely. By restricting the metric, any subset of a metric space is a metric space itself (a subspace). We call such a subset complete, bounded, totally bounded or compact if it, considered as a metric space, has the corresponding property.

Separation properties and extension of continuous functions

Metric spaces are paracompact Hausdorff spaces and hence normal (indeed they are perfectly normal). An important consequence is that every metric space admits partitions of unity and that every continuous real-valued function defined on a closed subset of a metric space can be extended to a continuous map on the whole space (Tietze extension theorem). It is also true that every real-valued Lipschitz-continuous map defined on a subset of a metric space can be extended to a Lipschitz-continuous map on the whole space.

Distance between points and sets

A simple way to construct a function separating a point from a closed set (as required for a completely regular space) is to consider the distance between the point and the set. If (M,d) is a metric space, S is a subset of M and x is a point of M, we define the distance from x to S as :d(x,S) = inf Then d(x, S) = 0 if and only if x belongs to the closure of S. Furthermore, we have the following generalization of the triangle inequality: :d(x,S) ≤ d(x,y) + d(y,S) which in particular shows that the map x |-> d(x,S) is continuous.

Equivalence of metric spaces

Comparing two metric spaces one can distinguish various degrees of equivalence. To preserve at least the topological structure induced by the metric, these require at least the existence of a continuous function between them (morphism preserving the topology of the metric spaces). Given two metric spaces (M1, d1) and (M2, d2):
- They are called topologically isomorphic (or homeomorphic) if there exists a homeomorphism between them.
- They are called uniformly isomorphic if there exists a uniform isomorphism between them.
- They are called isometrically isomorphic if there exists a bijective isometry between them. In this case, the two spaces are essentially identical. An isometry is a function f : M1M2 which preserves distances: d2(f(x), f(y)) = d1(x, y) for all x, y in M1. Isometries are necessarily injective.
- They are called similar if there exists a positive constant k > 0 and a bijective function f, called similarity such that f : M1M2 and d2(f(x), f(y)) = k d1(x, y) for all x, y in M1.
- They are called similar (of the second type) if there exists a bijective function f, called similarity such that f : M1M2 and d2(f(x), f(y)) = d2(f(u), f(v)) if and only if d1(x, y) = d1(u, v) for all x, y,u, v in M1. In case of Euclidean space with usual metric the two notions of similarity are equivalent.

Quotient metric space

If M is a metric space with metric d, and ~ is an equivalence relation on M, then we can endow the quotient set M/~ with the following (pseudo)metric. Given two equivalence classes [x] and [y], we define :d'([x],[y]) = \inf\ where the infimum is taken over all finite sequences (p_1, p_2, \dots, p_n) and (q_1, q_2, \dots, q_n) with [p_1]=[x], [q_n]=[y], [q_i]=[p_], i=1,2,\dots n-1. In general this will only define a pseudometric, i.e. d'([x],[y])=0 does not necessarily imply that [x]=[y]. However for nice equivalence relations (e.g., those given by gluing together polyhedra along faces), it is a metric. Moreover if M is a compact space, then the induced topology on M/~ is the quotient topology. The quotient metric d is characterized by the following universal property. If f:(M,d)\longrightarrow(X,\delta) is a short map between metric spaces (that is, \delta(f(x),f(y))\le d(x,y) for all x, y) satisfying f(x)=f(y) whenever x\sim y, then the induced function \overline:M/\sim\longrightarrow X, given by \overline([x])=f(x), is a short map \overline:(M/\sim,d')\longrightarrow (X,\delta).

Mathematics

Mathematics is often defined as the study of topics such as quantity, structure, space, and change. Another view, held by many mathematicians, is that mathematics is the body of knowledge justified by deductive reasoning, starting from axioms and definitions. Practical mathematics, in nearly every society, is used for such purposes as accounting, measuring land, or predicting astronomical events. Mathematical discovery or research often involves discovering and cataloging patterns, without regard for application. The remarkable fact that the "purest" mathematics often turns out to have practical applications is what Eugene Wigner has called "the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics." Today, the natural sciences, engineering, economics, and medicine depend heavily on new mathematical discoveries. The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthema) meaning "science, knowledge, or learning" and μαθηματικός (mathematikós) meaning "fond of learning". It is often abbreviated maths in Commonwealth English and math in North American English.

History

:Main article: History of mathematics The evolution of mathematics might be seen to be an ever-increasing series of abstractions, or alternatively an expansion of subject matter. The first abstraction was probably that of numbers. The realization that two apples and two oranges do have something in common, namely that they fill the hands of exactly one person, was a breakthrough in human thought. In addition to recognizing how to count concrete objects, prehistoric peoples also recognized how to count abstract quantities, like time -- days, seasons, years. Arithmetic (e.g. addition, subtraction, multiplication and division), naturally followed. Monolithic monuments testify to a knowledge of geometry. Further steps need writing or some other system for recording numbers such as tallies or the knotted strings called khipu used by the Inca empire to store numerical data. Numeral systems have been many and diverse. Historically, the major disciplines within mathematics arose, from the start of recorded history, out of the need to do calculations on taxation and commerce, to understand the relationships among numbers, to measure land, and to predict astronomical events. These needs can be roughly related to the broad subdivision of mathematics, into the studies of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematics since has been much extended, and there has been a fruitful interaction between mathematics and science, to the benefit of both. Mathematical discoveries have been made throughout history and continue to be made today.

Inspiration, pure and applied mathematics, and aesthetics

Mathematics arises wherever there are difficult problems that involve quantity, structure, space, or change. At first these were found in commerce, land measurement and later astronomy; nowadays, all sciences suggest problems studied by mathematicians, and many problems arise within mathematics itself. Newton invented infinitesimal calculus and Feynman his Feynman path integral using a combination of reasoning and physical insight, and today's string theory also inspires new mathematics. Some mathematics is only relevant in the area that inspired it, and is applied to solve further problems in that area. But often mathematics inspired by one area proves useful in many areas, and joins the general stock of mathematical concepts. As in most areas of study, the explosion of knowledge in the scientific age has led to specialization in mathematics. One major distinction is between pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Within applied mathematics, two major areas have split off and become disciplines in their own right, statistics and computer science. Many mathematicians talk about the elegance of mathematics, its intrinsic aesthetics and inner beauty. Simplicity and generality are valued. There is beauty also in a clever proof, such as Euclid's proof that there are infinitely many prime numbers, and in a numerical method that speeds calculation, such as the fast Fourier transform. G. H. Hardy in "A Mathematicians Apology" expressed the belief that these esthetic considerations are, in themselves, sufficient to justify the study of pure mathematics. Notation, language, and rigor

Mathematical writing is not easily accessible to the layperson. A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking's 1988 bestseller, contained a single mathematical equation. This was the author's compromise with the publisher's advice, that each equation would halve the sales. The reasons for the inaccessibility even of carefully-expressed mathematics can be partially explained. Contemporary mathematicians strive to be as clear as possible in the things they say and especially in the things they write (this they have in common with lawyers). They refer to rigor. To accomplish rigor, mathematicians have extended natural language. There is precisely-defined vocabulary for referring to mathematical objects, and stating certain common relations. There is an accompanying mathematical notation which, like musical notation, has a definite content and also has a strict grammar (under the influence of computer science, more often now called syntax). Some of the terms used in mathematics are also common outside mathematics, such as ring, group and category; but are not such that one can infer the meanings. Some are specific to mathematics, such as homotopy and Hilbert space. It was said that Henri Poincaré was only elected to the Académie Française so that he could tell them how to define automorphe in their dictionary. Rigor is fundamentally a matter of mathematical proof. Mathematicians want their theorems to follow mechanically from axioms by means of formal axiomatic reasoning. This is to avoid mistaken 'theorems', based on fallible intuitions; of which plenty of examples have occurred in the history of the subject (for example, in mathematical analysis). Axioms in traditional thought were 'self-evident truths', but that conception turns out not to be workable in pushing the mathematical boundaries. At a formal level, an axiom is just a string of symbols, which has an intrinsic meaning only in the context of all derivable formulas of an axiomatic system. It was the goal of Hilbert's program to put all of mathematics on a firm axiomatic basis, but according to Gödel's incompleteness theorem every (strong enough) axiom system has undecidable formulas; and so a final axiomatization of mathematics is unavailable. Nonetheless mathematics is often imagined to be (as far as its formal content) nothing but set theory in some axiomatization, in the sense that every mathematical statement or proof could be cast into formulas within set theory.

Is mathematics a science?

Carl Friedrich Gauss referred to mathematics as the Queen of the Sciences. The mathematician-physicist Leon M. Lederman has quipped: "The physicists defer only to mathematicians, and the mathematicians defer only to God (though you may be hard pressed to find a mathematician that modest)." If one considers science to be strictly about the physical world, then mathematics, or at least pure mathematics, is not a science. An alternative view is that certain scientific fields (such as theoretical physics) are mathematics with axioms that are intended to correspond to reality. In fact, the theoretical physicist, J. M. Ziman, proposed that science is public knowledge and thus includes mathematics. [http://info.med.yale.edu/therarad/summers/ziman.htm] In any case, mathematics shares much in common with many fields in the physical sciences, notably the exploration of the logical consequences of assumptions. Intuition and experimentation also play a role in the formulation of conjectures in both mathematics and the (other) sciences.

Overview of fields of mathematics

As noted above, the major disciplines within mathematics first arose out of the need to do calculations in commerce, to understand the relationships between numbers, to measure land, and to predict astronomical events. These four needs can be roughly related to the broad subdivision of mathematics into the study of quantity, structure, space, and change (i.e. arithmetic, algebra, geometry and analysis). In addition to these main concerns, there are also subdivisions dedicated to exploring links from the heart of mathematics to other fields: to logic, to set theory (foundations) and to the empirical mathematics of the various sciences (applied mathematics). The study of quantity starts with numbers, first the familiar natural numbers and integers and their arithmetical operations, which are characterized in arithmetic. The deeper properties of whole numbers are studied in number theory. The study of structure began with investigations of Pythagorean triples. Neolithic monuments on the British Isles are constructed using Pythagorean triples. Eventually, this led to the invention of more abstract numbers, such as the square root of two. The deeper structural properties of numbers are studied in abstract algebra and the investigation of groups, rings, fields and other abstract number systems. Included is the important concept of vectors, generalized to vector spaces and studied in linear algebra. The study of vectors combines three of the fundamental areas of mathematics, quantity, structure, and space. The study of space originates with geometry, beginning with Euclidean geometry. Trigonometry combines space and number. The modern study of space generalizes these ideas to include higher-dimensional geometry, non-Euclidean geometries (which play a central role in general relativity) and topology. Quantity and space both play a role in analytic geometry, differential geometry, and algebraic geometry. Within differential geometry are the concepts of fiber bundles, calculus on manifolds. Within algebraic geometry is the description of geometric objects as solution sets of polynomal equations, combining the concepts of quantity and space, and also the study of topological groups, which combine structure and space. Lie groups are used to study space, structure, and change. Topology in all its many ramifications may be the greatest growth area in 20th century mathematics. Understanding and describing change is a common theme in the natural sciences, and calculus was developed as a most useful tool. The central concept used to describe a changing quantity is that of a function. Many problems lead quite naturally to relations between a quantity and its rate of change, and the methods of differential equations. The numbers used to represent continuous quantities are the real numbers, and the detailed study of their properties and the properties of real-valued functions is known as real analysis. These have been generalized, with the inclusion of the square root of negative one, to the complex numbers, which are studied in complex analysis. Functional analysis focuses attention on (typically infinite-dimensional) spaces of functions. One of many applications of functional analysis is quantum mechanics. Many phenomena in nature can be described by dynamical systems; chaos theory makes precise the ways in which many of these systems exhibit unpredictable yet still deterministic behavior. Beyond quantity, structure, space, and change are areas of pure mathematics that can be approached only by deductive reasoning. In order to clarify the foundations of mathematics, the fields of mathematical logic and set theory were developed. Mathematical logic, which divides into recursion theory, model theory, and proof theory, is now closely linked to computer science. When electronic computers were first conceived, several essential theoretical concepts in computer science were shaped by mathematicians, leading to the fields of computability theory, computational complexity theory, and information theory. Many of those topics are now investigated in theoretical computer science. Discrete mathematics is the common name for the fields of mathematics most generally useful in computer science. An important field in applied mathematics is statistics, which uses probability theory as a tool and allows the description, analysis, and prediction of phenomena where chance plays a part. It is used in all the sciences. Numerical analysis investigates methods for using computers to efficiently solve a broad range of mathematical problems that are typically beyond human capacity, and taking rounding errors or other sources of error into account to obtain credible answers.

Common misconceptions

Mathematics is not a closed intellectual system, in which everything has already been worked out. There is no shortage of open problems. Pseudomathematics is a form of mathematics-like activity undertaken outside academia, and occasionally by mathematicians themselves. It often consists of determined attacks on famous questions, consisting of proof-attempts made in an isolated way (that is, long papers not supported by previously published theory). The relationship to generally-accepted mathematics is similar to that between pseudoscience and real science. The misconceptions involved are normally based on:
- misunderstanding of the implications of mathematical rigour;
- attempts to circumvent the usual criteria for publication of mathematical papers in a learned journal after peer review, with assumptions of bias;
- lack of familiarity with, and therefore underestimation of, the existing literature. The case of Kurt Heegner's work shows that the mathematical establishment is neither infallible, nor unwilling to admit error in assessing 'amateur' work. And like astronomy, mathematics owes much to amateur contributors such as Fermat and Mersenne. Mathematics is not accountancy. Although arithmetic computation is crucial to accountants, their main concern is to verify that computations are correct through a system of doublechecks. Advances in abstract mathematics are mostly irrelevant to the efficiency of concrete bookkeeping, but the use of computers clearly does matter. Mathematics is not numerology. Numerology uses modular arithmetic to reduce names and dates down to numbers, but assigns emotions or traits to these numbers intuitively or on the basis of traditions. Mathematical concepts and theorems need not correspond to anything in the physical world. In the case of geometry, for example, it is not relevant to mathematics to know whether points and lines exist in any physical sense, as geometry starts from axioms and postulates about abstract entities called "points" and "lines" that we feed into the system. While these axioms are derived from our perceptions and experience, they are not dependent on them. And yet, mathematics is extremely useful for solving real-world problems. It is this fact that led Eugene Wigner to write an essay on The Unreasonable Effectiveness of Mathematics in the Natural Sciences. Mathematics is not about unrestricted theorem proving, any more than literature is about the construction of grammatically correct sentences. However, theorems are elements of formal theories, and in some cases computers can generate proofs of these theorems more or less automatically, by means of automated theorem provers. These techniques have proven useful in formal verification of programs and hardware designs. However, they are unlikely to generate (in the near term, at least) mathematics with any widely recognized aesthetic value.

Distance

:This article is about distance in the mathematical / physical sense. For other uses, see distance (disambiguation). The distance between two points is the length of a straight line segment between them. In the case of two locations on Earth, usually the distance along the surface is meant: either "as the crow flies" (along a great circle) or by road, railroad, etc. Distance is sometimes expressed in terms of the time to cover it, for example walking or by car. Sometimes a distance thus indicated is ambiguous because the means of transport is neither mentioned nor obvious. Distance as mentioned above is sometimes not symmetric, hence not a metric (see below): this applies to distance by car in the case of one-way streets, and also in the case the distance is expressed in terms of the time to cover it (a road may be more crowded in one direction than in the other, for a ship upstream and downstream makes a difference). As opposed to a position coordinate, a distance can not be negative. Distance is a scalar quantity, containing only a magnitude, whereas displacement is an equivalent vector quantity containing both magnitude and direction. In the study of complicated geometries, we call the most common type of distance Euclidean distance, as we define it from the Pythagorean theorem.

Distance covered

Pythagorean theorem The distance covered by a vehicle (often recorded by a odometer), person, animal, object, etc. should be distinguished from the distance from starting point to end point, even if latter is taken to mean e.g. the shortest distance along the road, because a detour could be made, and the end point can even coincide with the starting point.

Formal definition

A distance between two points P and Q in a metric space is d(P,Q), where d is the distance function that defines the given metric space. We can also define the distance between two sets A and B in a metric space as being the minimum (or infimum) of distances between any two points P in A and Q in B. Alternatively, the distance between sets may indicate "how different they are", by taking the supremum over one set of the distance from a point in that set to the other set, and conversely, and taking the larger of the two values (Hausdorff distance).

The distance formula

The (Euclidean) distance, d, between two points expressed in Cartesian coordinates equals the square root of the sum of the squares of the changes of each coordinate. Thus, in a two-dimensional space :d = \sqrt, and in a three-dimensional space: :d = \sqrt. Here, "Δ" (delta) refers to the change in a variable. Thus, Δx is the change in x, pronounced as such, or as "delta-x". In mathematical terms, \Delta x = \left|x_1 - x_0\right|, and so (\Delta x)^2 = (x_1 - x_2)^2. This distance formula can be seen as a specialized form of the Pythagorean theorem; it can also be expanded into the arc-length formula.

Generalized distance in arbitrary dimensions: Norms

In the Euclidean space Rn, the distance between two points is usually given by the Euclidean distance (2-norm distance). Other distances, based on other norms, are sometimes used instead. For a point (x1, x2, ...,xn) and a point (y1, y2, ...,yn), the Minkowski distance of order p (p-norm distance) is defined as: p need not be an integer, but it cannot be less than 1, because then the triangle inequality does not hold. There is no such thing as a negative distance. The 2-norm distance is the Euclidean distance, a generalization of the Pythagorean theorem to more than two coordinates. It is what would be obtained if the distance between two points were measured with a ruler: the "intuitive" idea of distance. The 1-norm distance is more colourfully called the taxicab norm or Manhattan distance, because it is the distance a car would drive in a city laid out in square blocks (if there are no one-way streets). The infinity norm distance is also called Chebyshev distance. In 2D it represents the distance kings, queens, and bishops must travel between two squares on a chessboard. Also, if you measure the strength of each of the n links in a chain (where larger numbers mean weaker links), then because a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, the strength of the chain will be the infinity-norm distance from the list of measurements to the origin. The p-norm is rarely used for values of p other than 1, 2, and infinity, but see super ellipse. In physical space the Euclidean distance is in a way the most natural one, because in this case the length of a rigid body does not change with rotation.

Euclidean metric

In mathematics the Euclidean distance or Euclidean metric is the "ordinary" distance between the two points that one would measure with a ruler, which can be proven by repeated application of the Pythagorean theorem. By using this formula as distance, Euclidean space becomes a metric space (even a Hilbert space). Older literature refers to this metric as Pythagorean metric.

Definition

The Euclidean distance between two points P=(p_1,p_2,...,p_n)\, and Q=(q_1,q_2,...,q_n)\,, in Euclidean n-space, is defined as: :\sqrt = \sqrt

One-dimensional distance

For two 1D points, P=(p_x)\, and Q=(q_x)\,, the distance is computed as: :\sqrt = |p_x-q_x| The absolute value signs are used, since distance is normally considered to be an unsigned scalar value.

Two-dimensional distance

2D approximations for computer applications

A fast approximation of 2D distance based on an octagonal boundary can be computed as follows. Let dx = | p_x - q_x | (absolute value) and dy = | p_y - q_y|. If dy > dx, approximated distance is 0.41 dx + 0.941246 dy . (If dy < dx, swap these values.) The difference from the exact distance is between -6% and +3%; more than 85% of all possible differences are between -3% to +3%. The following Maple code implements this approximation and produces the plot on the right, with a true circle in black and the octagonal approximate boundary in red:

Other approximations exist as well. They generally try to avoid the square root, which is an expensive operation in terms of processing time, and provide various error:speed ratio. Using the above notation, dx + dy - (1/2)×min(dx,dy) yields error in interval 0% to 12% (attributed to Alan Paeth). A better approximation in term of RMS error is: dx + dy - (5/8)×min(dx,dy) and yields error in interval -3% to 7%. Also note that when comparing distances (for which is greatest, not for the actual difference), it isn't necessary to take the square root at all. If distance A is greater than distance B, then A^2 will also be greater than B^2. Or, when checking to see if distance A is greater than 2B, that is the same as comparing A^2 with (2B)^2 or 4B^2, etc. An example of the first case might be when trying to determine which nearest grid point an arbitrary point should "snap to" in a 2D CAD/CAM system. This isn't really an approximation, however, as the results are exact.

Three-dimensional distance

For two 3D points, P=(p_x,p_y,p_z)\, and Q=(q_x,q_y,q_z)\,, the distance is computed as: :\sqrt

3D approximations for computer applications

As noted in the 2D approximation section, when comparing distances (for which is greatest, not for the actual difference), it isn't necessary to take the square root at all. If distance A is greater than distance B, then A^2 will also be greater than B^2. An example is when searching for the minimum distance between two surfaces in 3D space, using a 3D CAD/CAM system. One way to start would be to build a point grid on each surface, and compare the distance of every grid point on the first surface with every grid point on the second surface. It isn't necessary to know the actual distances, but only which distance is the least. Once the closest two points are located, a much smaller point grid could be created around those closest points on each surface, and the process repeated. After several iterations, the closest two points could then be fully evaluated, including the square root, to give an excellent approximation of the minimum distance between the two surfaces. Thus, the square root only needs to be taken once, instead of thousands (or even millions) of times.

Geometry

Geometry (Greek γεωμετρία; geo = earth, metria = measure) arose as the field of knowledge dealing with spatial relationships. It was one of the two fields of pre-modern mathematics, the other being the study of numbers. In modern times, geometric concepts have been generalized to a high level of abstraction and complexity, and have been subjected to the methods of calculus and abstract algebra, so that many modern branches of the field are barely recognizable as the descendants of early geometry. (See areas of mathematics and algebraic geometry.)

The earliest geometry

The earliest recorded beginnings of geometry may be traced to Ancient Egypt (see geometry in Egypt) and Ancient Babylon (see Babylonian mathematics) around 3000 B.C. Early geometry was a collection of empirically discovered principles concerning lengths, angles, areas, and volumes, which were developed to meet some practical need in surveying, construction, astronomy, and various crafts. Among these were some surprisingly sophisticated principles, and a modern mathematician might be hard put to derive some of them without the use of calculus. For example, both the Egyptians and the Babylonians were aware of versions of the Pythagorean theorem about 1500 years before Pythagoras; the Egyptians had a correct formula for the volume of a frustum of a square pyramid; the Babylonians had a trigonometry table. Chinese culture at this same time period was equally advanced, so it is likely that they had an equally advanced mathematics, but no artifacts have survived from which we could learn about it. This may be partly due to their early use of paper, rather than clay tablets or stone, to record their achievements.

The Greek period (c. 600 B.C. – 600 A.D.)

The Greek Period must be considered in detail, since geometry, for most of its history, was what the Greeks made it. For the Ancient Greeks, geometry was the crown jewel of their sciences, reaching a completeness and perfection of methodology that no other branch of their knowledge had attained. They expanded the range of geometry to many new kinds of figures, curves, surfaces, and solids; they changed its methodology from trial-and-error to logical deduction; they recognized that geometry studies “eternal forms”, or abstractions, of which physical objects are only approximations; and they developed the idea of an “axiomatic theory”, which, for more than 2000 years, was regarded to be the ideal paradigm for all scientific theories.

Thales and Pythagoras

Thales (635-543 B.C.) of Ionia (now southwestern Turkey), was the first to whom deduction in mathematics is attributed. There are five geometric propositions for which he wrote deductive proofs, though his proofs have not survived. Pythagoras (582-496 B.C.) of Ionia, and later, Italy, then colonized by Greeks, may have been a student of Thales, and probably traveled to Babylon and Egypt. The theorem that bears his name was not his discovery, but he was the first to give a deductive proof of it. He gathered a group of students around him to study mathematics, music, and philosophy, and together they discovered most of what high school students learn today in their geometry courses. In addition, they made the profound discovery of incommensurable lengths and irrational numbers.

Plato

Plato (427-347 B.C.), the philosopher most esteemed by the Greeks, had inscribed above the entrance to his famous school, “Let none enter here who are ignorant of geometry.” Though he was not a mathematician himself, his views on mathematics had great influence. Mathematicians thus accepted his belief that geometry should use no tools but a compass and straight edge – never measuring instruments such as a marked ruler or a protractor, because these were a workman’s tools, not worthy of a scholar. This dictum led to a deep study of the possible ruler and compass constructions, and three classic ruler-and-compass problems: how to use these tools to trisect an angle, to construct a cube twice the volume of a given cube, and to construct a square equal in area to a given circle. The proofs of the impossibility of these constructions, finally achieved in the 19th century, led to important principles regarding the deep structure of the real number system. Aristotle (384-322 B.C.), Plato’s greatest pupil, wrote a treatise on methods of reasoning used in deductive proofs (see Logic) which was not substantially improved upon until the 19th century.

Euclid

Euclid (365?-275? B.C.), probably a student of one of Plato’s students, wrote a treatise in 13 books (chapters), titled The Elements of Geometry, in which he presented geometry in the ideal axiomatic form. The treatise is not a compendium of all that the Greeks knew at the time about geometry; Euclid himself wrote eight more advanced books on geometry. We know from other references that Euclid’s was not the first elementary geometry textbook, but it was so much superior that the others fell into disuse and were lost. He was brought to the university at Alexandria by Ptolemy I, King of Egypt. The Elements began with definitions of terms, fundamental geometric principles (called axioms or postulates), and general quantitative principles (called common notions) from which all the rest of geometry could be logically deduced. Following are his five axioms, somewhat paraphrased to make the English easier to read. # Any two points can be joined by a straight line. # Any finite straight line can be extended in a straight line. # A circle can be drawn with any center and any radius. # All right angles are equal to each other. # If two straight lines in a plane are crossed by another straight line (called the transversal), and the interior angles between the two lines and the transversal lying on one side of the transversal add up to less than two right angles, then on that side of the transversal, the two lines extended will intersect (also called the parallel postulate). It was soon observed, and no doubt Euclid himself knew, that his fifth axiom could be replaced by the shorter statement “Given a line and a point not on the line, there is only one line through the given point and in the same plane with the given line that does not intersect the given line.” This is called Playfair’s Axiom, after the British teacher who proposed to make the replacement in all the school textbooks. The axioms, according to Plato, should be simple and self-evident principles, so clearly true that they need no proof. Euclid’s first four axioms meet this criterion, but the fifth, even if replaced by Playfair’s Axiom, is not simple, and most would say not self-evident like the first four. The fifth resembled more the theorems that Euclid proved from the axioms. Furthermore, Euclid developed a substantial part of his theory of triangles without using the Fifth Axiom. The speculation arose, probably during Euclid’s lifetime, that the Fifth Axiom can and should be proved as a theorem from the first four, and thus is unnecessary as an axiom. Thus began many centuries of attempts to prove the Fifth Axiom, and the question was not settled until the 19th century.

Archimedes

Archimedes (287-212 B.C.), of Syracuse, Sicily, when it was a Greek city-state, was the greatest of the Greek mathematicians, and often named as one of the three greatest of all time (along with Isaac Newton and Carl Friedrich Gauss). Had he not been a mathematician, he would still be remembered as a great physicist, engineer, and inventor. In his mathematics, he developed methods very similar to the coordinate systems of analytic geometry, and the limiting process of integral calculus. The only element lacking for the creation of these fields was an efficient algebraic notation in which to express his concepts.

After Archimedes

After Archimedes, Greek mathematics began to decline. There were a few minor stars yet to come, but the golden age of geometry was over. Proclus (410-485), author of Commentary on the First Book of Euclid, was one of the last important players in Greek geometry. He was a competent geometer, but more importantly, he was a superb commentator on the works that preceded him. Much of that work did not survive to modern times, and is known to us only through his commentary. The Roman Republic and Empire that succeeded and absorbed the Greek city-states produced excellent engineers, but no mathematicians of note.

The Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Reformation

The great library of Alexandria was burned. There is a growing consensus among historians that the Library of Alexandria likely suffered from several destructive events, but that the destruction of Alexandria's pagan temples in the late 4th century was probably the most severe and final one. The evidence for that destruction is the most definitive and secure. Caesar's invasion may well have led to the loss of some 40,000-70,000 scrolls in a warehouse adjacent to the port (as Luciano Canfora argues, they were likely copies produced by the Library intended for export), but it is unlikely to have affected the Library or Museum, given that there is ample evidence that both existed later. Civil wars, decreasing investments in maintenance and acquisition of new scrolls and generally declining interest in non-religious pursuits likely contributed to a reduction in the body of material available in the Library, especially in the fourth century. The Serapeum was certainly destroyed by Theophilus in 391, and the Museum and Library may have fallen victim to the same campaign. The Islamic ascendency in the Middle East, north Africa, and Spain began about 640 A.D. Original Arab mathematics during this period was primarily algebraic rather than geometric, though there were important commentaries on geometry. Omar Khayyám, for example, was a geometer as well as a poet. Scholarship in Europe declined until even the great works of antiquity were lost to them, and survived only in the Islamic centers of learning. When Europe started to emerge from the intellectual darkness of the Middle Ages, the writers of Ancient Greece and Rome were rediscovered in Islamic libraries and translated from Arabic into Latin. Euclid’s Elements of Geometry was recovered, and the rigorous deductive methods of geometry were relearned. Development of geometry in the style of Euclid resumed, resulting in an abundance of new theorems and concepts, many of them very profound and elegant.

The 17th and early 18th centuries

In the early 17th century, there were two important developments in geometry. The first and most important was the creation of analytic geometry, or geometry with coordinates and equations, by Rene Descartes (1596-1650) and Pierre de Fermat (1601-1665). This was a necessary precursor to the development of calculus and a precise quantitative science of physics. The second geometric development of this period was the systematic study of projective geometry by Girard Desargues (1591-1661). Projective geometry is the study of geometry without measurement, just the study of how points align with each other. There had been some early work in this area by Greek geometers, notably Pappus (c. 340). The greatest flowering of the field occurred with Jean-Victor Poncelet (1788-1867). In the late 17th century, calculus was developed independently and almost simultaneously by Isaac Newton (1642-1727) and Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (1646-1716). This was the beginning of a new field of mathematics now called analysis. Though not itself a branch of geometry, it is applicable to geometry, and it solved two families of problems that had long been almost intractable: finding tangent lines to odd curves, and finding areas enclosed by those curves. The methods of calculus reduced these problems mostly to straightforward matters of computation.

The late 18th and 19th centuries

Non-Euclidean geometry

The old problem of proving Euclid’s Fifth Postulate, the "Parallel Postulate", from his first four postulates had never been forgotten. Beginning not long after Euclid, many attempted demonstrations were given, but all were later found to be faulty, through allowing into the reasoning some principle which itself had not been proved from the first four postulates. By 1700 a great deal had been discovered about what can be proved from the first four, and what the pitfalls were in attempting to prove the fifth. Saccheri, Lambert, and Legendre each did excellent work on the problem in the 18th century, but still fell short of success. In the early 19th century, Gauss, Johann Bolyai, and Lobatchewsky, each independently, took a different approach. Beginning to suspect that it was impossible to prove the Parallel Postulate, they set out to develop a self-consistent geometry in which that postulate was false. In this they were successful, thus creating the first non-Euclidean geometry. By 1854, Bernhard Riemann, a student of Gauss, had applied methods of calculus in a ground-breaking study of the intrinsic (self-contained) geometry of all smooth surfaces, and thereby found a different non-Euclidean geometry. This work of Riemann later became fundamental for Einstein's theory of relativity. It remained to prove mathematically that the non-Euclidean geometry was just as self-consistent as Euclidean geometry, and this was first accomplished by Beltrami in 1868. With this, non-Euclidean geometry was established on an equal mathematical footing with Euclidean geometry. While it was now known that different geometric theories were mathematically possible, the question remained, "Which one of these theories is correct for our physical space?" The mathematical work revealed that this question must be answered by physical experimentation, not mathematical reasoning, and uncovered the reason why the experimentation must involve immense (interstellar, not earth-bound) distances. With the development of relativity theory in physics, this question became vastly more complicated.

Introduction of mathematical rigor

All the work related to the Parallel Postulate revealed that it was quite difficult for a geometer to separate his logical reasoning from his intuitive understanding of physical space, and, moreover, revealed the critical importance of doing so. Careful examination had uncovered some logical inadequacies in Euclid's reasoning, and some unstated geometric principles to which Euclid sometimes appealed. This critique paralleled the crisis occurring in calculus and analysis regarding the meaning of infinite processes such as convergence and continuity. In geometry, there was a clear need for a new set of axioms, which would be complete, and which in no way relied on pictures we draw or on our intuition of space. Such axioms were given by David Hilbert in 1894 in his dissertation Grundlagen der Geometrie (Foundations of Geometry). Some other complete sets of axioms had been given a few years earlier, but did not match Hilbert's in economy, elegance, and similarity to Euclid's axioms.

Analysis situs, or topology

In the mid-18th century, it became apparent that certain progressions of mathematical reasoning recurred when similar ideas were studied on the number line, in two dimensions, and in three dimensions. Thus the general concept of a metric space was created so that the reasoning could be done in more generality, and then applied to special cases. This method of studying calculus- and analysis-related concepts came to be known as analysis situs, and later as topology. The important topics in this field were properties of more general figures, such as connectedness and boundaries, rather than properties like straightness, and precise equality of length and angle measurements, which had been the focus of Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Topology soon became a separate field of major importance, rather than a sub-field of geometry or analysis.

General relativity

General relativity (GR) is the geometrical theory of gravitation published by Albert Einstein in 1915. It unifies special relativity and Isaac Newton's law of universal gravitation with the insight that gravitation is not viewed as being due to a force (in the traditional sense) but rather a manifestation of curved space and time, this curvature being produced by the mass-energy content of the spacetime.

Overview

spacetime In this theory, spacetime is treated as a 4-dimensional Lorentzian manifold which is curved by the presence of mass, energy, and momentum (or stress-energy) within it. The relationship between stress-energy and the curvature of spacetime is governed by the Einstein field equations. The motion of objects being influenced solely by the geometry of spacetime (inertial motion) occurs along special paths called timelike and null geodesics of spacetime.
One of the defining features of general relativity is the idea that gravitational 'force' is replaced by geometry. In general relativity, phenomena that in classical mechanics are ascribed to the action of the force of gravity (such as freefall, orbital motion, and spacecraft trajectories) are taken in general relativity to represent inertial motion in a curved spacetime. So what people standing on the surface of the Earth perceive as the 'force of gravity' is a result of their undergoing a continuous physical acceleration caused by the mechanical resistance of the surface that they are standing on.

Justification

The justification for creating general relativity comes from the equivalence principle, which dictates that freefalling observers are the ones in inertial motion. A consequence of this insight is that inertial observers can accelerate with respect to each other. (Think of two balls falling on opposite sides of the Earth, for example.) This phenomenon violates Newton's first law of motion, and cannot be accounted for in the Euclidean geometry of special relativity either. To quote Einstein himself: : If all accelerated systems are equivalent, then Euclidean geometry cannot hold in all of them. Another motivating factor was the realization that relativity calls for gravitation to be expressed as a rank-two tensor, and not just a vector as was the case in Newtonian physics [http://www.bun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~suchii/gen.GR3.html]. (An analogy is the electromagnetic field tensor of special relativity). Thus Einstein sought a rank-two tensor means of describing curved spacetimes surrounding massive objects. This effort came to fruition with the discovery of the Einstein field equations in 1915.

Fundamental principles

General relativity is based on a set of fundamental principles which guided its development. These are:
- The general principle of relativity: The laws of physics must be the same for all observers (accelerated or not).
- The principle of general covariance: The laws of physics must take the same form in all coordinate systems.
- The principle that inertial motion is geodesic motion: The world lines of particles unaffected by physical forces are timelike or null geodesics of spacetime.
- The principle of local Lorentz invariance: The laws of special relativity apply locally for all inertial observers.
- Spacetime is curved: This permits gravitational effects such as freefall to be described as a form of inertial motion. (See the discussion below of a person standing on Earth, under "Coordinate vs. physical acceleration.")
- Spacetime curvature is created by stress-energy within the spacetime: This is described in general relativity by the Einstein Field Equations. (The equivalence principle, which was the starting point for the development of general relativity, ended up being a consequence of the general principle of relativity and the principle that inertial motion is geodesic motion.)

Spacetime as a curved Lorentzian manifold

In general relativity, the concept of spacetime (which was introduced by Hermann Minkowski for special relativity) is modified. In general relativity spacetime is
- curved: Spacetime has a non-Euclidean geometry. In special relativity, spacetime is flat.
- Lorentzian: The metrics of spacetime must have a mixed metric signature. This is inherited from special relativity.
- four dimensional: to cover the three spatial dimensions and time. This is also inherited from special relativity. The curvature of spacetime (caused by the presence of stress-energy) can be viewed intuitively in the following way. Placing a heavy object such as a bowling ball on a trampoline will produce a 'dent' in the trampoline. This is analogous to a large mass such as the Earth causing the local spacetime geometry to curve. This is represented by the image at the top of this article. The larger the mass, the bigger the amount of curvature. A relatively light object placed in the vicinity of the 'dent', such as a ping-pong ball, will accelerate towards the bowling ball in a manner governed by the 'dent'. Firing the ping-pong ball at just the right speed towards the 'dent' will result in the ping-pong ball 'orbiting' the bowling ball. This is analogous to the Moon orbiting the Earth, for example. Similarly, in general relativity massive objects do not directly impart a force on other massive objects as hypothesized in Newton's action at a distance idea. Instead (in a manner analogous to the ping-pong ball's response to the bowling ball's dent rather than the bowling ball itself), other massive objects respond to how the first massive object curves spacetime.

The mathematics of general relativity

:Full article: Mathematics of general relativity Due to the expectation that spacetime is curved, Riemannian geometry (also known as non-Euclidean geometry) must be used. In essence, spacetime does not adhere to the "common sense" rules of Euclidean geometry, but instead objects that were initially traveling in parallel paths through spacetime (meaning that their velocities do not differ to first order in their separation) come to travel in a non-parallel fashion. This effect is called geodesic deviation, and it is used in general relativity as an alternative to gravity. For example, two people on the Earth heading due north from different positions on the equator are initially traveling on parallel paths, yet at the north pole those paths will cross. Similarly, two balls initially at rest with respect to and above the surface of the Earth (which are parallel paths by virtue of being at rest with respect to each other) come to have a converging component of relative velocity as both accelerate towards the center of the Earth due to their subsequent freefall. (Another way of looking at this is how a single ball moving in a purely timelike fashion parallel to the center of the Earth comes through geodesic motion to be moving towards the center of the Earth.) The requirements of the mathematics of general relativity are further modified by the other principles. Local Lorentz Invariance requires that the manifolds described in GR be 4-dimensional and Lorentzian instead of Riemannian. In addition, the principle of general covariance forces that math to be expressed using tensor calculus. Tensor calculus permits a manifold as mapped with a coordinate system to be equipped with a metric tensor of spacetime which describes the incremental (spacetime) intervals between coordinates from which both the geodesic equations of motion and the curvature tensor of the spacetime can be ascertained.

The Einstein field equations

:Full article: Einstein field equations The Einstein field equations (EFE) describe how stress-energy causes curvature of spacetime and are usually written in tensor form (using abstract index notation) as : G_ = \kappa\, T_ \ where G_ \ is the Einstein tensor, T_ \ is the stress-energy tensor and \kappa \ is a constant. The tensors G_ \ and T_ \ are both rank 2 symmetric tensors, i.e. they can each be thought of as 4×4 matrices each of which contains 10 independent terms. The solutions of the EFE are metrics of spacetime. These metrics describe the structure of spacetime given the stress-energy and coordinate mapping used to obtain that solution. Being non-linear differential equations, the EFE often defy attempts to obtain an exact solution; however, many such solutions are known. The EFE reduce to Newton's law of gravity in the limiting cases of a weak gravitational field and slow speed relative to the speed of light. In fact, the value of \kappa \ in the EFE is determined to be \kappa = 8 \pi G / c^4 \ by making these two approximations. The EFE are the identifying feature of general relativity. Other theories built of the same premises include additional rules and/or constraints. The result almost invariably is a theory with different field equations (such as Brans-Dicke theory, teleparallelism, Rosen bimetric theory, and Einstein-Cartan theory).

Coordinate vs. physical acceleration

One of the greatest sources of confusion about general relativity comes from the need to distinguish between coordinate and physical accelerations. In classical mechanics, space is preferentially mapped with a Cartesian coordinate system. Inertial motion then occurs as one moves through this space at a consistent coordinate rate with respect to time. Any change in this rate of progression must be due to a force, and therefore a physical and coordinate acceleration were in classical mechanics one and the same. It is important to note that in special relativity that same kind of Cartesian coordinate system was used, with time being added as a fourth dimension and defined for an observer using the Einstein synchronization procedure. As a result, physical and coordinate acceleration correspond in special relativity too, although their magnitudes may vary. In general relativity, the elegance of a flat spacetime and the ability to use a preferred coordinate system are lost (due to stress-energy curving spacetime and the principle of general covariance). Consequently, coordinate and physical accelerations become sundered. For example: Try using a radial coordinate system in classical mechanics. In this system, an inertially moving object which passes by (instead of through) the origin point is found to first be moving mostly inwards, then to be moving tangentially with respect to the origin, and finally to be moving outwards, yet is moving in a straight line. This is an example of an inertially moving object undergoing a coordinate acceleration, and the way this coordinate acceleration changes as the object travels are given by the geodesic equations for the manifold and coordinate system in use. Another more direct example is the case of someone standing on the Earth, where they are at rest with respect to the surface coordinates for the Earth (latitude, longitude, and elevation) but are undergoing a continuous physical acceleration because the mechanical resistance of the Earth's surface keeps them from free falling.

Predictions of General Relativity

Gravitational effects

Acceleration effects

These effects occur in any accelerated frame of reference, and are therefore independent of the curvature of spacetime. (Note however that spacetime curvature usually is the source the causative acceleration when these effects are being observed.)
- Gravitational redshifting of light: The frequency of light will decrease (shifting visible light towards the red end of the spectrum) as it moves to higher gravitational potentials. Confirmed by the Pound-Rebka experiment.
- Gravitational time dilation: Clocks will run slower at lower potentials than the observer in a gravitational field. Confirmed by the Haefele-Keating experiment and GPS.
- Shapiro effect (a.k.a. gravitational time delay): Signals will take longer than expected to move through a gravitational field. Confirmed through observations of signals from spacecraft and pulsars passing behind the Sun as seen from the Earth.

Bending of light

This bending also occurs in any accelerated frame of reference. However, the details of the bending and therefore the gravitational lensing effects are governed by spacetime curvature.
- The magnitude of this effect is twice the Newtonian prediction. Confirmed by astronomical observations during eclipses of the Sun and observations of pulsars passing behind the Sun.
- Gravitational lensing: One distant object in front of or close to being in front of another much more distant object can change how the more distant object is seen. These effects include
  - Multiple views of the same object: Observed of quasars whose light passes close to an intervening galaxy.
  - Brightening of a star due to the focusing effects of a planet or another star passing in front of it: Such "microlensing" events are now regularly observed.
  - Einstein rings and arcs: One object directly behind another can make the more distant object's light appear as a ring. When almost directly behind, the result is an arc. Observed for distant galaxies.

Orbital effects

These are ways in which the celestial mechanics of general relativity differs from that of classical mechanics.
- Non-Newtonian periapsis precession: The apsides of orbits precess more than expected under Newton's theory of gravity. Confirmed for Mercury and observed in several binary pulsars.

Orbital decay due to the emission of gravitational radiation: This has been observed in binary pulsars.

Geodetic precession: Because of the curvature of spacetime, the orientation of an orbiting gyroscope will change over time. This is being tested by Gravity Probe B.

Rotational effects

These involve the behavior of spacetime around a rotating massive object.
- Frame dragging: A rotating object will drag the spacetime along with it. This will cause the orientation of a gyroscope to change over time. For a spacecraft in a polar orbit, the direction of this effect is perpendicular to the geodetic precession mentioned above. This prediction is also being tested by Gravity Probe B.

Black holes

Black holes are objects which have gravitationally collapsed behind an event horizon. In a "classical" black hole, nothing that enters can ever escape. However, Stephen Hawking has shown the black holes can "leak" energy, a phenomenon called Hawking radiation.

Cosmological effects


- Expansion of the universe: This is predicted by cosmological solutions of the Einstein Field Equations. Its existence was confirmed by Edwin Hubble in 1929.
  - Cosmological redshift: Light from distant galaxies will be redshifted due to their movement away from the observer.
- Big Bang: The arising of the universe from a primordial singularity
  - Cosmic background radiation: The remnants of the primordial fireball. Discovered by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in 1965.
- Dark energy: An unobserved energy that is spread throughout the universe. Recent observations of distant supernovae indicate that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. The Einstein Field Equations can support this type of universe only if 70% of its stress-energy is in the form of this dark energy.

Other predictions


- The equivalence of inertial mass and gravitational mass: This follows naturally from freefall being inertial motion.
  - The strong equivalence principle: Even a self-gravitating object will respond to an external gravitational field in the same manner as a test particle would. (This is often violated by alternative theories.)
- Gravitational radiation: Orbiting objects and merging neutron stars and/or black holes are expected to emit gravitational radiation.
  - Orbital decay (described above).
  - Binary pulsar mergers: May create gravitational waves strong enough to be observed here on Earth. Several gravitational wave observatories are (or will soon be) in operation. However, there are no confirmed observations of gravitational radiation at this time.
  - Gravitons: According to quantum mechanics, gravitational radiation must be composed of quanta called gravitons. General relativity predicts that these will be spin-2 particles. They have not been observed.
  - Only quadrupole (and higher order multipole) moments create gravitational radiation.
